Artist's Comments

While on my recent stock-discovery kick, I spotted `lockstock's beautiful [Roses 2] and the first thing that popped into my mind was, "That's such an Anita look!" I adore the first six of Laurell K. Hamilton's "Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter" books, and this gave me the perfect opportunity to create a fan art.

For those unfamiliar with the series, Anita Blake is a petite, female necromancer / vampire executioner ( ... / leopard queen / wolf lupa / vampire servant / member of two power triumvirates / federal marshal / demigod ...) with dark hair, pale skin, and a multitude scars down her collarbone and left arm from her many adventures.

Girl seriously, strongly ref'ed from `lockstock's [Roses 2].

Anita Blake © Laurell K. Hamilton

Edit (Dec 7, '07): Paled the skin and darkened the hair. Hopefully this version is a lot more Anita-like.

I love the eyes and the hair....and the scars are..interesting to say the least. :D

Can I ask for tips on coloring scars? For like, all media. One of my characters has a large one, so I'm asking. :3

I love all the texture and brush marks in her hair. Also, the blood red background is so appropriate, and the combination of dark brown and red looks nice together. I like this one a lot. P:

Wow! Gorgeous!
I love the texture of her skin. It's so subtle, but makes it look SO realistic.
Beautiful pic!

Sure! Generally scars are smooth and shiny, anywhere from pink to white in color. The newer a scar is, the more raised and darker pink it is. As they age, scars tend to flatten, stretch, and fade until they're just shiny white spots, many times indistinguishable from the surrounding areas except for shine. If you need help picturing how lighting would look from specific angles, take some sort of pink gel (hair gel, shower gel, liquid hand soap) and put a line of it on your arm. Move it around until you see the angle you're looking for.

Good places to look for reference are costume makeup websites, or (if you're really brave) do a Google search for "scar" and see what turns up.

Hope that helps!
