Artist's Comments

As with my other tutorials, boredom struck 30% of the way into my current project and I made this to kill some of the restlessness. Hope it's easy to follow and helpful! Enjoy, and feel free to post any questions I haven't answered in there.

nice gallery, nice tutorial. It's cool to see how others create their art. I would have like to know if this was photoshop or painter and a little more about the brushes you use, and maybe a little about your blending. Very nice job! :)

I only have Photoshop at the moment, and for the great majority of everything I use a soft round brush on 25% opacity. I don't hate the smudge tool, I just think the low opacity brush has a nicer blending effect and overall appearance. The only other brush I touch is a self-made speckle brush (just random dots on a blank canvas with the soft round brush, saved as a seprate brush) like the one I mention in this tutorial. The roughness tends to make skin more real looking by taking away the unnatural smoothness that comes with digital painting, and hiding any less-than-perfectly blended streaks.

Hope that answers it, but feel free to ask again if I didn't do a good job explaining. :D Glad you like the art!

wow. nice tutorial! But...why not use the dodge tool? What's wrong with it?
